  • Elton John Oscar Viewing Party 2015

For the past 23 years, the Elton John AIDS Foundation has successfully raised over $45 million dollars with its stellar and ultra-glam annual Academy Awards Viewing Party; one of the most prestigious highlights of the Oscars weekend. Each year the star-filled gala event is hosted by Sir Elton John and David Furnish and features not only the crème de la crème in entertainment but a veritable cavalcade of celebrities and stars. The funds raised by the event help the Foundation to make a real difference in the lives of people at risk for or living with HIV/AIDS, including urgently needed medical care in the Caribbean, innovative treatment and prevention programs in the Southern United States, and national initiatives addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States and Canada.

This year’s event will be held at West Hollywood Park and is being sponsored by generous corporate support from Chopard, Neuro Drinks, and Wells Fargo. Co-sponsors also include Audi, The Fiore Group, M∙A∙C Viva Glam, and the Starkey Hearing Foundation. Party patrons will enjoy a sumptuous dinner prepared by Gordon Ramsay whilst enjoying the live telecast of the 87th Annual Academy Awards at the Dolby Theater. Post dinner entertainment will be provided by cultural icon and musical innovator Nile Rodgers & CHIC as well as by DJ Johnny Dynell, who will be spinning tunes for the dance floor.

The success of the annual event is also due to the impressive list co-chair support received from the likes of Tim and Jane Allen, Francesco Aquilini, Bill and Tani Austin, Johnny and Edwina Barbis, Joseph W. Blount, Jim Carrey, Chris Colfer, Miley Cyrus, John Demsey, Roland Emmerich, Frank Giustra, Tim Hanlon and Anthony Klatt, Samuel L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Diana Jenkins, Nick Jonas, Quincy Jones, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, Billie Jean King and Ilana Kloss, Heidi Klum, Ryan Kwanten, Fred Latsko, Shelley Lazar, Sandra Lee, Jared Leto, Sheryl and Rob Lowe, Eric and Janet McCormack, Joe McMillan, Mike and Kelly Myers, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, Tyler Perry, Adam Press, Caroline Scheufele, Russell Simmons, Ian Somerhalder, Sharon Stone, and Denzel and Pauletta Washington.

It is this celebrity support which not only validates the foundation’s dedication to the eliminating the HIV virus but also to the efforts of its volunteers and staff in becoming one of the world’s largest HIV grant-makers. Through its special events, generous sponsors, and charitable donations from all over the world, the EJAF has provided over $300 million for the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS since its inception in 1992.

Though the face of HIV has changed over the last 30 years and many are living longer and more productive lives due to advances in drug therapy, media attention on the AIDS crisis has waned in many parts of the world and as a result, there are thousands of new cases every year across various global population sectors. There are still approximately 1.2 million people living with HIV in the U.S .alone. Of those, one in five is unaware of their infection, leading to an estimated 49,300 new American cases each year. Unfortunately, according to the EJAF, only 25% of people living with HIV (a total of 329,000 people) have successfully responded to HIV treatment with a suppressed HIV viral load.

Yet in the face of media and public complacency, The Elton John AIDS Foundation has never lost sight of the issue and has championed so many programmes aimed at treating, preventing, and eventually eradicating the virus; providing grants to fund policy work and front-line initiatives for many different AIDS-related projects from ending injection-related HIV transmission to Gay Men’s mobilisation for health, access to healthcare for ex-offenders to mobilisation within the Black community.
